In the early 70s Ibanez really was a masterful copycat brand. Their entire Golden Oldies catalog was just one copy after the other. Right around here, at the start of 1976 when success had found the band, Paul strayed from his Gibsons and tried a couple of Ibanez guitars. He would end up getting an Ibanez Destroyer that Ace took a liking to and more or less claimed as his. But before that there was this, a really brief dalliance with an Ibanez 2387CT.
Ibanez had added the Rocket Roll to their stable of guitars in 1973 but the 2387CT appeared in 1975. It wasn't quite a complete copy of the classic 1957 Gibson Flying V, but it wasn't far off. It had the three controls in a line which was very 1975-ish, and the pickguard was more or less the same as the '57 Flying V. The difference was that the 2387CT had the output jack positioned on the inside of the lower wing.
This is the one and only time that Paul seems to have used this guitar. It's not visible in the backstage photos from Portland, Oregon five days earlier so this could have been a true one-off. He might have gotten it as part of a wooing by Ibanez, maybe he just saw it (and the Destroyer) and liked the look of it, or maybe he just borrowed it from someone. I doubt we will ever know much more about it.
